Volunteering in the fibre garden

We have opportunity for you to spend one session per week or fortnight at organicARTS working in a small group of max 5 people with a facilitator.

Eve Malster has recently been awarded the Vodafone ‘World of Difference’ grant to work with us developing a fibre based ‘arm’ to our work. Eve is founder of the project ‘FutureThreads’ which aims to raise awareness and enthusiasm for fibre based education.

Working alongside Eve and other members of the organicARTS s team you will be:

  • Preparing the soil to plant a small flax crop (flax is made into the fabric ‘linen’ and used for its seeds ‘linseed’)
  • Preparing a small polytunnel structure to grow cotton in.
  • Planting the flax and cotton.
  • Learning how to make paper using plants and seeds from around the farm.
  • Making a journal using your paper.
  • Journaling the process of growing flax and cotton using; photography, interviews, research, story, drawings etc.
  • Using the bushcraft site to sit around the camp fire and learn how brambles and nettles are made into fibres and cordage.
  • Helping to design and make the processing equipment for flax using green wood-working skills. We will work closely with a skilled bushcraft expert for this part (Nic from ‘Great Bear Bushcraft’ has also been awarded the ‘world of difference’ grant for this year).

By the end of this process (lasting about 4 months) you will have learnt many skills about how plants are made into fibres, cordage, rope, fabric. You will have spent lots of time outdoors and met new people. You will have eaten healthy homemade food, sat around a campfire and shared or even created stories and you will take home a journal of everything you experienced and learnt.

The important thing is to sign up NOW as its time to get planting!
