The Makers Group

What is The Makers Group?

The Makers Group runs weekly on a Thursday, 10.30am – 1.30pm. The group is a funded, creative and social, providing a regular weekly session for anyone and all abilities (we have supported many individuals who are socially isolated or have lived experience of mental or physical ill health). The weekly session is a blend of external practitioners teaching specific skills, productive making time with our facilitator Megan, and development of individual practice. The group teaches new skills and creative processes, offering a welcoming and friendly atmosphere to socialise, and provides an opportunity to make, market and sell the artwork created. It is a place where people are encouraged to express themselves creatively and individually.

Skills we have learnt and continue to develop are:

  • Hand weaving using looms and alternative structures
  • Natural dyeing with use of the organicARTS dye garden
  • Sewing of small textile pieces such as cushions, purses, tea towels
  • Ceramics using clay from the land, experimenting with earthenware
  • Free painting, drawing and expressive techniques
  • Macrame knotting, crochet and knitting
  • Mosaics
  • Life drawing
  • Pattern development – collaging, design,
  • Lino and Screen Printing

Can I just turn up?

Please contact us to arrange a day and time for an informal visit, to be shown around the garden and decide if you would like to volunteer.

What our Maker Group members say:

“It helps immensely having the opportunity to meet up with other creative people. It’s great to have time to chat and enjoy being part of a group of others living with mental health difficulties.”

“The makers group has helped me reconnect with my creative mind. The staff are kind and understanding and don’t pressure members to achieve, but to enjoy the process! They are very enthusiastic and make a great effort to ensure we have a varied and happy session, which we all appreciate.”
