During the first lockdown in March 2020 we started an interview series with the wonderful people who contribute to organicARTS. Now that we find ourselves back in lockdown what a better time to start it up again!
This week we had a virtual chat with Cathy, one of our Trustees. Cathy tells us about her role, and her passion for wildlife and looking after guide dogs!
How did you first become involved with organicARTS?
I used to work with someone who knew Andy Bragg (West Town Farm Farmer) . They told me about the community engagement undertaken by organicARTS, so I decided to pop along to an Open Day. This fun event showcased the extensive work undertaken by the charity at West Town Farm, engaging youngsters so they learnt where food originates, highlighting the environmental benefits of organic farming, and using materials from the farm to create works of art. Andrew showed me round the volunteer garden and I loved the space and the ethos behind it. The rest is history!
What role do you play within the organicARTS community?
I’m one of the trustees, which involves ensuring the charity delivers its aims and objectives, is financially viable and sustainable. We take an overview of the running of the organisation, make sure any current issues are addressed, future challenges are identified and contingency plans put in place.
Why do you enjoy being a part of organicARTS?
I wholeheartedly condone the ethos of the charity, and have huge respect for all our employees who engage with the public in a respectful and sympathetic way to deliver a wide range of education, creative and gardening skills using the farm as a base. The countryside setting is idyllic – the farm is on the edge of Exeter where I live, and as soon as I arrive and walk past the community garden, I feel a huge sense of peace and wellbeing to be surrounded by such beautiful nature.
Tell us/ show us something you are passionate about!
I love walking and am a respite boarder for guide dogs for the blind, so I have an excuse to go for a walk every day. I particularly enjoy walking in the countryside, but sometimes I just go down to the river Exe and walk around the flood relief channel. It’s surprising how much wildlife there is to see, even in the city. I would love to see an otter in the wild, but haven’t managed that yet! One day…
Cathy is a wonderful addition to the organicARTS team, bringing focus, drive and happiness to every meeting and project. Thank you for all your hard work Cathy! We look forward to being able to hold another open day event soon to show everyone the work we do in person.
