Investigating West Town Farm’s Geology

Peter and Lucy from OrganicARTS are investigating West Town Farm’s Geology as a resource for Art and Ceramic Materials.

Geology at West Town FarmPeter and Lucy walked the farm last week identifying sites for investigating materials such as clays and sands. Did you know there are 6 different identified geology areas on the farm?

We are lucky to have a rich deposit of clay at the bottom of Easterbrooks but what about other clays found on the slopes of the Ashton Shales and the beautiful range of red sands in the Crackington formation along the road cutting or the dark red iron rich materials found in the Basalt in the Quarry? Then there is the Breccia rock along the railway cutting which is made up of a whole mix of different materials! What are the stories behind these rocks…..?

Next week Peter and Lucy will be collecting soil samples with an auger focusing on clays and shales in a few different identified sites for investigating in the pottery.
