Ceramic Skulls with Peter Jeffs
20 September, 2025 @ 10:00 am – 1:30 pm
Delve into the earthy world of clay – create decorative skulls for your own Day of the Dead celebrations.

The term CALAVERA is often used for decorative skulls made from either sugar or clay, used in the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead.
Day of the Dead is a holiday traditionally celebrated on November 1 and 2, exchanging a mournful for a celebratory occasion of those who have died and often taking a humorous tone. Celebrants may meet in the cemetery to remember amusing events and anecdotes about the departed, or have little shrines at home decorated with marigolds.
In this 3.5 hour workshop you will make two small clay skull tokens, as well as a larger decorated calavera face, with full, step by step teaching based on the real shapes of the human skull – learning the basics of claywork.
Peter Jeffs is a potter renowned for his mystical, earthy figures and faces. Using the anatomy of the face and body as a starting point, he evolves life-like forms into ethereal beings who might live at the bottom of your garden – or indeed the depths of the ocean.
The skulls will be dried and fired in the kiln at organicARTS, in time for your own ‘dia de los muertos’ celebration. We will contact you when it is ready to be collected.
This workshop is suitable for adults and young people aged 14+. The morning will include a pause for a short walk in the beautiful surroundings of organicARTS (fingers crossed for the weather!) – please wear suitable footwear and bring a packed lunch.
Please let us know your access requirements when you book your ticket. Workshop cost includes all materials and firing.
